DHL vs Royal Mail Which is Better for International Shipping?
By Postal & Courier Etc · Kentish Town, London NW5 · May 2026 · 6 min read
If you need to send a parcel internationally from London, two names come up more than any other: DHL and Royal Mail. Both are trusted, both are widely available, and both have been shipping parcels for decades. But they are very different services designed for very different needs and choosing the wrong one can cost you time, money, or both.
As an authorised DHL Express Service Point in Kentish Town NW5, we send parcels via both DHL and Royal Mail every week. This is our honest comparison based on real 2026 experience, not marketing copy.
The Short Answer
For international shipping, DHL Express is faster, more reliable, better tracked and more secure. Royal Mail International is cheaper but significantly slower, with limited insurance and inconsistent tracking once your parcel leaves the UK.
If your parcel is valuable, time-sensitive or important: use DHL.
If your parcel is light, non-urgent and low in value: Royal Mail may be acceptable.
For almost everything else, DHL wins.
Speed No Contest
DHL is a good choice for more urgent and highly valuable international orders. Via DHL Express Worldwide from London, most major international destinations receive parcels in 1 to 3 business days. The USA typically takes 1 to 2 days. Europe takes 1 to 2 days. Australia and Asia take 2 to 4 days. These are consistent, guaranteed transit times backed by DHL's own service level commitments.
Royal Mail International Tracked, by comparison, takes 5 to 7 business days to Europe and 6 to 9 business days to the USA. Royal Mail International Economy takes even longer typically 6 to 12 weeks for some destinations. If your recipient is waiting for something, Royal Mail's international timelines are simply not competitive with DHL Express.
Tracking DHL Is Far Superior
This is one of the biggest practical differences between the two services. DHL Express provides real-time, end-to-end tracking from the moment your parcel is collected in London to the moment it is delivered at the front door. You see every scan: UK collection, UK export clearance, international gateway, destination customs clearance, out for delivery, delivered. The recipient gets notifications automatically.
Royal Mail's international tracking works well within the UK. However, once your parcel crosses the border, tracking frequently becomes unreliable. In many countries, tracking stops updating once the parcel enters the local postal network. For recipients in the USA, Australia, parts of Africa and Asia, this means anxious waiting with no real visibility of where their parcel is. For valuable or important items this is simply not good enough.
Insurance and Protection
DHL could offer competitive pricing for international shipments and it also offers significantly better protection for what you are sending. DHL includes a level of basic liability on every shipment and offers enhanced insurance up to the full declared value of your item. If your parcel is lost or damaged, the claims process is structured and handled professionally.
Royal Mail's international compensation is limited. Standard cover is typically capped at £100 for loss or damage on international tracked services. For anything worth more than that electronics, clothing, gifts, business documents this cover is inadequate. Royal Mail does offer additional compensation through Signed and Special Delivery services domestically, but internationally the protection is far weaker than DHL's.
Customs Clearance
This is where DHL's advantage is most significant in 2026. DHL has its own dedicated customs clearance infrastructure in every major country it serves. When your parcel arrives at a US, Australian or European gateway, DHL's own customs team handles the import declaration, pays any applicable duties on the recipient's behalf, and moves the parcel through clearance quickly. This is why DHL Express parcels clear customs in hours rather than days.
Royal Mail international parcels pass through each country's national postal customs process, which is slower, less predictable and more prone to delays. A parcel that takes 6 days via Royal Mail to the USA might spend 3 of those days sitting in US customs waiting to be processed. There is very little transparency and no proactive intervention if something goes wrong.
Price Where Royal Mail Has Its Advantage
Royal Mail is cheaper. For a 1kg parcel to the USA, Royal Mail International Tracked costs from approximately £12 to £18 depending on the service. DHL Express Worldwide for the same parcel costs from around £28 to £35. That difference is real and for some shipments it matters.
However, it is worth considering what you are paying for. The price difference buys you an extra 4 to 7 days of waiting, significantly weaker tracking, less insurance, and slower customs clearance. For a low-value non-urgent item a paperback book, a pair of socks, a simple document Royal Mail may be perfectly adequate. For anything else, the extra cost of DHL is almost always worth it.
At our store we access commercial DHL rates that are typically 10 to 20 percent below the prices you would find booking directly online, which narrows the price gap further.
Our Honest Verdict
Use DHL Express when: your parcel is valuable, you need it there quickly, the recipient needs to track it, you want professional customs handling, or you cannot afford for it to go missing.
Use Royal Mail International when: your parcel is under 1kg, its value is under £50, the recipient is not in a hurry, and you want to minimise postage cost above all else.
For the vast majority of international parcels sent from London, DHL Express is the better choice. It costs more but it delivers faster, tracks properly, clears customs smoothly, and protects your item properly. In shipping, as with most things, you generally get what you pay for.
